Hopeless Muggle
Topic: Geocaching
So apparently, even with a shiny new 12 satellite GPS, I am totally incapable of finding a geocache on my own. It was REALLY nice of the person who placed the cache to basically say that I (and the other person who posted on the geocaching website that they couldn't find it either) am basically blind. *sigh* Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that Larry just bought me a very nice new GPS, I would be quite tempted to just say geocaching was something I tried and just couldn't get into. (Sorry Paula!!!) However, since it would be criminal to not use my new GPS, I will keep trying. It's just frustrating that I've tried three times now, and each time has been a bust. It seems that thousands of other people manage just fine. What the heck is my problem??? It certainly isn't the GPS! :)
It was gorgeous and sunny this morning, but it quickly degenerated into a rainy day. Luckily, I managed to get in my fruitless geocaching expedition before the rain really got going.

The Week In Review
Topic: This and That
Today is Armed Forces Day. (Thought it was worth a mention, especially since I'm married to someone in said Armed Forces.)
The sun did make an appearance today, which is always nice.
This picture was taken on Thursday, in our back patio. I love how happy Ryan looks in it! It really shows off his energy, which of course he's got TONS of!
It's been quite a week. As I mentioned before, Monday I had minor surgery. Basically, I had a harmless lump that I wanted out, so I had it removed. It's fairly common, apparently. I was in and out in one day. The hospital I went to was nice. I think it's more of a private hospital, rather than the main city hospital. It was more like a big house with a lot of rooms, rather than the cold, industrial feeling a lot of hospitals have. The staff was friendly and compassionate. I felt like I was in good hands.
Wednesday Larry had an appointment down at Lakenheath. I really wasn't quite up to traveling, but since I'd never been there, I went anyway. Lakenheath and Mildenhall are the two main bases in the area. It's funny, because military people in Germany used to travel a long way just to come to Ramstein, or to Leighton (where Larry and I were). Now we're the ones traveling to the bigger bases and feeling like we're back to civilization! Lakenheath has a fairly nice bx, small shops, and food court. Ryan and I looked around while Larry had his appointment. When Larry was done, we shopped a bit. We got Ryan a new pair of shoes. Very spiffy!
By Thursday I was feeling better, but still really tired. Luckily, Ryan took a major nap so I was able to take one, too. Unfortunately, Ryan's got a bit of a cold. His nose is very runny, but otherwise he's fine.
Yesterday was the first day I felt like my energy was back to near normal. I took Ryan, caught the bus, and went to the May Fair at MHS. (I have to say, that every time I have boarded the bus, there's been someone who very kindly has helped me get the stroller on or off the bus.) The weather caught me off guard a bit. I didn't dress me or Ryan quite warmly enough. It was cold and rainy. Luckily we weren't outside too much.
The May Fair was a lot like the bazaars on the posts in Germany, only much smaller. There were some of the same sorts of things, like jewelry, linens, artwork, collector's coins, Russian nesting dolls, that sort of thing. Some things were different. There were Welsh love spoons instead of the Austrian cookie molds, for example. I don't know what got into Ryan, but he was good and quiet the entire time I shopped! :) After looking around, I got a photo note card (see previous blog entry), some hand made soaps, and three small jars of honey. The vendors were very nice. I got into a friendly, philosophical conversation with the honey vendors about age, vanity, and child rearing!
It felt good to get out and about. On the bus ride home, we passed a pub called, "Bed," whose slogan was, "Who will you spend the night in Bed with?" *grin*
That night I made enchiladas for dinner. I realized, mid-preparation, that I didn't have nearly enough sauce. I got creative. Apparently if you take a ton of mild taco sauce and add ketchup, it works pretty well. Sounds gross, but I was desperate. I was relieved when it actually tasted decent!
Today I've been a bit tired from all the stuff I did yesterday. I think I was just so glad to be up and about that I overdid it just a bit.
This evening Larry and Ryan and I did a quick jaunt to the Borders near Leeds. For Mother's Day, Larry got me a shiny new GPS. It's very nice. I broke it in a little during our trip. I would like to take it out geocaching tomorrow, weather permitting.
Here are a few pictures from this past week. Link to Photo Album Five Pics From May Today I picked up the teapot I painted at the spouse's coffee. It turned out pretty well, considering I have no artistic talent whatsoever (at least where drawing and painting are concerned). Larry took one look at it and said, "Miss the beach much? You could just write, 'Santa Barbara' on it." :)
For a bit of a Ryan update, he seems to be getting sweeter and smarter every day. He's now doing this thing where he leans his cheek in to be kissed and sometimes says, "Kiss" while doing it. It's really cute! Also, he's able to recognize some letters (B, T, Y, O) and the number 2. We have bath letters and numbers. During bath time, we'll ask Ryan what the letters and numbers are. What's really cool, is that we can ask him to find a given letter (that he knows), and he can find it among all the other ones, even if it's backwards or upside down or whatever. He also meows if he sees a cat, and has developed the somewhat disturbing trend of repeating things we say. We really have to watch out now! :) He still mostly uses his own language, but he's leaning more towards actual words we can understand.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Rainy Day
Topic: This and That
It's one of those rain-all-day sorts of days today.
The picture here is of the Stray. That's pretty much what it looked like last week when I ran through it. This photo is on the front of a note card I bought yesterday at the May Fair at MHS. I saw the photo, and knew I'd never take one of my own, so I had to have it. There are some interesting black and white photos of Harrogate on the photographer's website: Paul Franklin Photography

Teaser
Topic: This and That
Hello. This is sort of a teaser/preview of what to expect once I get to it:
Sunday Larry ran the Sheffield half marathon. Ryan and I did the 3k "fun run." Pictures coming soon. Monday I had minor surgery. (All is well. No worries. No pictures!) Today I spent recovering. Tomorrow we're going to Lakenheath. The teapot I painted at the spouse's coffee is ready to be picked up, so I will do that Thursday. Pictures to follow (maybe). :) That's the short version. Hope everyone is having a good week. I can't believe that not only is May already half over, but the year almost is, too!

Weather
Topic: This and That
Today it rained all day. It was a reminder that, oh yeah - we live in England! It was the sort of day where you turn around and it's four o'clock and you think, "Where did the day go??? We didn't do anything!"
Tomorrow should be lots better. Larry's got a half marathon in Sheffield. There's a 3k fun run that I plan on doing with Ryan in the jogging stroller. There are also all sorts of activities for spectators to do while waiting for their loved ones to finish the race. It's supposed to rain, but hopefully it won't be too bad.
I got lulled into a false sense of spring with all the nice weather we've been having over the last few days. On the bright (so to speak) side, it hasn't been cold at least, just rainy.

Slide!
Topic: Ryan
This evening, Larry and I took Ryan outside to play in our back patio (it's not big enough to be considered a, "yard"). Today, for the first time, Ryan climbed up the slide, slid down, and landed just fine all by himself! Yay!

Good Few Days
Topic: This and That
The last few days have been pretty good. The weather's been great and we've been busy. Wednesday, Larry was home recovering from staff duty, so I got the car. I took Ryan and went on post and visited with a friend, then ran some errands. Not long after I got home, I heard something come through the letter box in the door. IT WAS A LETTER FROM JK ROWLING!!!!! *HUGE Grin, Does Happy Dance!* Not too long ago, I wrote to her. I was thrilled she wrote back. The letter was hand dated and hand signed. It was friendly and personal, addressing different things I'd written in my letter to her. It means a lot to me that she took the time and effort to respond, and to do so graciously. Thank you, Jo! :)
Later on in the afternoon, Larry watched Ryan, and I went for a run. The weather's been absolutely gorgeous lately. It was sunny and warm. There were all sorts of people out and about on the Stray. There were families, couples, groups of teens - some lounging about and some playing sports (cricket and soccer). There were lots of people running.
After I got cleaned up, I took Ryan out to the Stray to run around while Larry went for a run on our treadmill. When we got back, Larry still had a minute left to run. Ryan was fascinated by the treadmill. When Larry was done, he let Ryan take a turn on it. Ryan went nuts and loved it. Scary! :)
Yesterday I got to visit with my friend Andra and her husband, Beau. It was wonderful to see them! (Hi Andra!) Andra and I met while doing community theater in Germany (we acted together in the play, "June Groom"). Andra and Beau got me into karaoke, too. I used to sing pretty regularly while we were doing the play.
I hadn't seen Andra and Beau in years. They came from the States to visit family and friends in Germany and England. I had such a great time during their visit! Ryan and I met them at the shopping center and had lunch at the tea room, Betty's. (Andra took this picture of Ryan during our lunch there.) After that, we walked back to my house, and relaxed and chatted. It was great to catch up. Andra shared her photos from Germany with me and it was a trip down memory lane. Most of the photos were of places I knew. It was neat to be able to revisit them through viewing the photos and talking with Andra.
Later on in the evening, Larry watched Ryan again so I could go run. I love the late evening sun this time of year. It never ceases to amaze me the difference time of day and year make in a place. I ran around the Stray again, but for some reason this time I noticed the scenery more than I did the day before. I apologize because I am terrible when it comes to identifying types of trees. There's a diagonal stretch of tree-lined path through one part of the Stray. The trees are full of bunches of delicate pink blooms, forming a beautiful canopy. During a light breeze, the petals flutter through the air and all around, covering the ground in a soft, light pink carpet. In the wind, it's like a pale pink snow storm, with petals swirling through the air, and purling into puddles near walls and shrubs.
Today Ryan and I took the MHS Shuttle on post. It was much less crazy and Knight-Bus-like this time (and also only a couple of minutes late). However, I had to giggle a little when I looked directly above our seats to see a broom in the luggage rack.
We went to my friend Sarah's house, and had a relaxing lunch outside in her back yard. Ryan enjoyed the change of scenery and I enjoyed being social.
Here are some photos from the last few days. Link to Photo Album Mid May Pics Enjoy! Hope everyone has a good weekend.
